Geophysical investigation to locate an existing telecommunications network in the area of the planned routing of a new Fiber Optic cable for the needs of an energy community in the Lagkada area, Thessaloniki

Optical Fiber Location – Technological developments in the field of geophysical exploration are a crucial tool in the implementation of modern infrastructures, especially in cases where accuracy, safety and speed are required. A typical example is the recent intervention of MOBACT in Lagkada, Thessaloniki, where a geophysical survey was carried out to identify existing telecommunications and other underground networks along the planned route of a new Fiber Optic cable. This action is part of the infrastructure planned for the energy community of the region, contributing to its digital and energy transformation.

Subject and objective of the study
The main objective of this study was to design and implement a geophysical survey using the GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) method, with the aim of identifying existing underground networks prior to trenching. These underground infrastructures mainly concerned Optical Fiber Locating and electrical networks (low and medium voltage, street lighting, OTE cables and Optical Fiber Locating), as well as hydraulic networks (water supply, sewage, irrigation, firefighting, fuel networks).
The methodology included:
- Planning and scheduling of field work.
- Drawing and on-site marking of sections.
- Conducting measurements using the Georadar method at depths of up to 1-2 meters.
- Optical Fiber Location
- Marking of detected targets in the field.
- Confirmation of findings through exploratory excavations (validation) with an excavator.

The value of the "Scan and Mark" method
The "Scan and Mark" method, as implemented by MOBACT, offers substantial advantages in projects that require precision in locating underground infrastructure. It is a combination of technology and practical application, where GPR measurement is accompanied by immediate on-site evaluation and marking of the findings. This process makes it possible to:
- Immediate identification of underground networks, without time-consuming delays.
- Significantly reducing the risk of work accidents by protecting technicians from unknown underground facilities.
- Securing existing cables and pipes from destructive interventions.
- Improving productivity, as excavations are carried out with precision and without the need for repeated interventions.
- Preventing costly mistakes, such as accidentally cutting active optical fibers, which can lead to service interruptions and penalties.
Especially in areas where networks are complex or there are no updated infrastructure plans, the "Scan and Mark" method becomes a critical tool, ensuring smooth progress of projects with a high level of safety and efficiency.

Confirmation of findings and in-situ documentation
The MOBACT team, after marking potential targets in the field, proceeded to on-site excavations with an excavator to confirm the findings in real time. This practical validation enhanced the reliability of the Fiber Optic Locator results and provided valuable data for decision making by the project contractor, before the final execution of the excavation works.

Optical Fiber Location – Conclusions
The successful implementation of the geophysical survey in the Lagadas area demonstrates MOBACT's potential in the field of advanced underground detection services. The application of the GPR method and the "Scan and Mark" model for Optical Fiber Locating highlighted the advantages of combined technology and field experience, offering a safe and productive environment for the implementation of new generation infrastructure projects, with respect for the existing network and the people working on it.
