Underground Networks Detection with Ground Penetrating Radar – Redex SA

Locating Underground Networks with GPR Technology

In a recent and demanding project of the company Redex SA, the MOBACT took over the project detection of underground networks using ground penetrating radar (GPR), supporting the safe execution of excavation work in a time-limited and technically demanding space. The project concerned digging a trench for the installation of a new medium voltage cable route, in a space where operation could not be interrupted and there was a strong presence of existing facilities.

The Field of Challenge

The main challenge in this project was the coexistence multiple underground networks in the same routing zone:

  • Telecommunications cables
  • Medium voltage cables
  • Street lighting network
  • Various pipes (e.g. electrical or hydraulic)

The information about existing networks was limited, due to age and lack of updated as-built drawings from previous construction phases. The absence of accurate mapping made the work extremely difficult. precarious, especially as the excavation was taking place in real time.

GPR – The Non-Destructive Solution

The method ground penetrating radar (GPR) constituted the best choice for the project of locating underground networks. GPR technology uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves that propagate underground and return reflected signals from any change in material or structure. Thus, underground objects, conduits, pipes and cavities are located without any intervention or destruction of the soil.

The main advantages of the method are:

  • Non-destructive detection without the need for excavation
  • Accuracy in depth and position detection of networks
  • Immediate response in dynamic project conditions
  • Safety for the workshops and the existing network

The Role of MOBACT

MOBACT, with specialization in studies and field research, undertook the complete design and execution of the on-site GPR scanning. The project was implemented with:

  • Direct communication between the customer's field engineers and our technicians
  • Coordination between all parties involved: contractor, consultant and engineering team of MOBACT
  • Full coverage of the field with high-resolution scanning and the aim of avoiding accidents
  • Data processing and documentation by our team, with high quality deliverables that included diagrams of identified networks, estimated depths and technical risk assessment

Our Difference

What differentiates MOBACT in the market is the know-how and the structured approach which offers:

  • Specialized GPR operators and engineers with experience in complex construction sites
  • Support capacity in dynamic projects with little time
  • Surrender technically sound and fully documented deliverables that are directly incorporated into application studies
  • Flexibility and immediate response to customer needs in the field

Conclusion

Locating underground networks with ground penetrating radar is most necessary in excavation projects, especially in environments with increased complexity and limited information. MOBACT proves every day that it is the most reliable partner for a safe, valid and documented approach to underground networks, with an emphasis on prevention, safety and technical accuracy.
